Nicky McMillen, a senior at the University of Utah, PRT, Hospitality emphasis.
This weekend I got the pleasure of chatting with Nicky. He is a good friend and a fellow student in PRT. Nicky, originally from Portland, Oregon now lives here in Utah because of his decision to attend the University of Utah. Some of his reasons include his hobby of snowboarding and the PRT program. Nicky loves the outdoors and he wants to work in the field that he loves, which is why he has decided to pursue hospitality management so that he can work at high-end ski resorts and be able to board for the rest of his life. Nicky told me that he previously worked in an assisted living facility serving the residents meals and he discovered that he is very good at dealing with tough situations with angry costumers being able to master “turning that frown, upside down.” That’s how he knew he wanted to pursue a career where he would have to do that all the time. Nicky and I share the same inspiration of our fellow classmates being the ones to inspire us because in PRT we all want to do the best we can and be successful. If we fast forward five years, Nicky would be most content working a job where he still can snowboard A LOT and believe me, he WILL do just that. Nicky enlightened me that one concept that will for sure live on after college is that the average person will hold onto garbage for 27 steps before littering. Very interesting. Nicky enjoys the fact that his internship served as a platform for advancement in his current job. He went from managing 20 people who were flipping burgers to managing 140 ushers and ticket takers and has gained valuable experience in scheduling, crowd management, large event emergency response procedures, creating invoices, payroll, hiring paperwork, and various other steps in the event planning process.
Some final advice Nicky would give to fellow PRT students is to stay on top of deadlines and network among your peers.
Oh, and he lacerated his spleen freshman year.
And lastly GO UTES.
